Three subspecies of Variable Dancer occur in our area; they vary in body and wing coloration, as the common name would suggest, with colors becoming lighter south to north. Argia fumipennis atra (Black Dancer) is found in the southernmost part of the state; in the Piedmont, we see Argia fumipennis fumipennis (Smoky-winged Dancer); the clear-winged form, Argia fumipennis violacea (Violet Dancer) is found in the Blue Ridge and Ridge and Valley regions.
